15 COLLEGE VALUES
I read this articual on Yahoo this morning. Being a mother of five I know how hard it is on parents and the kids to come up with the money to go to college. In these times parents and children are really strapped for extra money to go to college. I am also going to try and find out some information on college loans consolidations.
A Good and affordable education should be a basic right for all. Not just for the privileged.
I hope that this hub will help all you parents out there wondering where the money will come from.
UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE
With the support of respected academics, humanitarians and other visionaries, this student body will benefit from tuition free university and represent a new wave in global education
Shai Reshef higher education entrepreneur had an ambitious plan to start a global University free to any one with an Internet connection. The United Nations and Yale Law School's information Society Project support this project. As yet it only offers two programs, business admin. and computer science. The university makes money in two ways, admission fees $10 to $100. Students also pay to take the exams that run around $10 to $100.
They employ about five paid instructors. Those instructors administer courses designed by a corps of faculty volunteers numbering about 800, by Reshef's count. Those professors put together courses using open courseware.
Bellevue Community College
If you're looking for another deal, you might try a community college. Bellevue Community College, located near Seattle, offers great opportunities in IT and Microsoft is headquartered just five miles away. Additionally, you can get a solid (and inexpensive) start on a four-year degree here. In-state tuition is about $89 a credit, and out-of-state tuition is $261 a credit.
College of the Ozarks
I THINK THIS IS A GOOD ONE TO LOOK INTO. I wish I had known about this University when my children were looking to go to college.
This school is known as "Hard Work U" for a reason. Every student who attends this school pays $0 for tuition. How does that work out? Well, every student at the College of the Ozarks is expected to be involved for 15 hours a week in an on-campus work program, and receive a scholarship.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
If you are intrested in a career in civil service or in non- profit work, then this state public school may be for you. It is located in Harrisonburg VA. In- state residents pay about $7,000 for tuition and out-of-state students pay $18,500
TEXAS A&M
Once Texas A&M was thought to be primerely an agracultral University. It is now considered a Senior Military College. Tuition is in the neighborhood of $8,000 for residents and about $22,000 for out-of-state students. Besides being a great University the weather is pretty decent there year round.
University of Oklahoma
An indication of its high academic quality come from the large number of National Merit Scholars who choose to attend the University of Oklahoma. With the high number of Rhodes Scholars that graduate from the school, and the high quality of student life via the football program and other activities, and it's not hard to see why it's considered a good value. In-state tuition: About $8,000. Out-of-state tuition: Close to $18,000
Hunter College
This school is part of the City University of New York system, offering a good education at a reasonable price right in the heart of the city that never sleeps. There is a good student to faculty ratio, and the school is especially geared toward professionals. In-state tuition runs about $5,000 and out-of-state tuition is near $10,000.
SUNY Geneseo
Besides being a great university, if you like to be outdoors there is a lot to do all year round. Sking, fishing, hunting, swimming at the many lakes are just a few of the things to do in this area.
This liberal arts public school, located in Geneseo, N.Y., is part of the State University of New York system. Geneseo offers a good liberal arts education at a good price: about $6,000 for residents and $10,000 for out-of-state students. Many contend that the feel of SUNY Geneseo is very like that of a small private school, but without the private school price.
University of Virginia
Thomas Jefferson established this school more than 200 years ago. Its campus is full of history and beauty, and it regularly ranks high among public universities. However, it does not have the price tag that one would associate with a top school. In-state tuition is close to $10,000 a year, but it's the out-of-state tuition that really becomes expensive at about $30,000.
UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO
Located in the heart of Boulder, Colo., with beautiful mountain vistas surrounding it, this is a great university for research. No longer a cow pasture, this campus has grown into a bustling institution of higher learning in the desert. Located in Tempe, Ariz., and not terribly far from Phoenix, ASU offers a good honors college and boasts an entrepreneurship network. In-state tuition is about $6,000, and out-of-state tuition is close to $18,500
Brigham Young University
If you don't mind living in the heart of Mormon country, BYU can be a good choice, especially in terms of private school value. Many students also enjoy the good international studies program, with educational opportunities at the BYU Jerusalem Center. It's a solid value for a private school. You don't even have to be LDS to attend (although you'll pay less if you are). Tuition for church members is about $4,500 per year and twice that for non-LDS

Hi Granny's House - University of the People sounds Ideal to me. Overall, your round up of colleges and universities is quite informative and gives students ideas about less expensive education that is remarkably good. Sweat equity really does pay off.
these are good finds for single mothers
I work at a college. and I found this very useful. Thank you for the information
I am a single Mom. This hub has been a lot of help. God Bless
Granny, sifting through college information can be mind boggling. Always good to have another site to consult. The College of the Ozarks sounds interesting. I wonder how they do it.
Of course most colleges and universities would be better equipped to provide affordable tuition if they didn't waste millions of dollars on athletes and coaches--not strictly speaking a large part of the student body. These folks, while well intentioned, also do not give much back to society. We fewer entertainers and more people whose work benefits society.
I like the sound of University of the People and will check more into that one since I'm trying to go to college to take some 'Web Developer' courses. A Computer Science degree would be helpful to me.
Thanks for this great list.
I am a teacher and this is going to be a great help.

SUNY Geneseo is truly a Gem! Great academics, professors, campus pride, I just loved the place. More than 40% of grads go on to graduate school, 92% med school placement rate, you can't go wrong with a Geneseo education.
Geneseo has been mention throughout many rankings this year...take a look at the URL.
Granny I visited your hub after you recommended it a great read with lots of info. I am intrigued by the low tuition if it was a doctorate program Id already be signed up. Its amazing how much school costs it takes years to pay back even with a good job. Thanks so much for sharing your page.
